Robert Owen was a utopian socialist from Wales. Owen seen what the Industrial Revolution had done to workers and wanted to do something about it. He concluded that long hours and grim working and living conditions turned workers in to brutes. In 1799, Owen and his businessmen bought the New Lanark textile mills in Scotland. Owen had set up schools for the young, built better housing foil workers and even prohibited labor for children under 10 years old. After seeing how New Lanark thrived, he decided that he wanted to create a small experimental community based on socialist ideals of cooperation and group effort. So in 1825, Owen bought and in Indiana and started the "New Harmony" community. This new community was said to be a utopia which is a perfect society. Owen stated that all the workers must share in the labor and profits, but harmony did not prevail. Residents in New Harmony fought over how things should be run which led to the ending of the New Harmony. Even though Owen's society did not succeed, his hope for creating better working conditions for laborers endured.
